Introduction
This guide helps you troubleshoot and optimize your smartphone's touch functionality, whether you use PuK products or not. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, this guide should help.
- False input from the PuK Thumbstick (Drift)
- Failed inputs from the PuK Thumbstick or Triggers
- Intermittent touch input functionality in general (your thumb)
Quick Screen recalibration
For reliable touch performance when using PuK products, we recommend that you do this once before each session to allow your display to set it's capacitive baseline with PuK products installed. Most of the time it won't be necessary and you might only need to follow this process if touch issues occur.
- Load your game of choice
- Attach all touch-interface devices (Triggers and PuK Thumbstick)
- Tap the power button to put the display to sleep (it’s ok if you need to shift a trigger sideways to gain access to the device power button)
- Press the power button again to wake the phone and unlock if necessary
Calibration complete.
Quick PuK recalibration
After first performing the Screen recalibration, on some devices you may still experience false PuK Thumbstick inputs (Drift).
The next most common quick fix for PuK Thumbstick input issues is the following:
- Load your game of choice
- Remove the thumbstick from your device display
- Place the Thumbstick back onto the display.
Overheating
Some devices start to show intermittent touch and multitouch issues if they become too hot. Here are some tips to help with this.
- Use an external cooler - Coolers prevent overheating and ensure that you can get the most graphical performance out of your device.
- Close down background apps & operations - This ensures that your device isn’t working harder than it needs to be.
- Activate Game mode - Many devices have a ‘game optimisation feature’ which automatically closes background operations and generally optimises your device performance.
Optimise Phone settings
There are a series of settings that are common among devices which you should experiement with. Every device is different and every display is calibrated slightly differently at the factory, so results may vary.
- Accidental touch protection - Try turning this off
- Touch sensitivity settings - We recommend that you try turning this setting on/up when using a screen protector, but turning off can resolve general touch issues in some cases too.
- Lock your notifications panel and edge panel - On a small number of devices the triggers can occasionally falsely activate notification panels (interpreted as a swipe from the top). Many devices feature a setting which allows you to turn this off while gaming, usually within device ‘gaming’ settings.
- Check your advanced settings or developer options for additional sensitivity adjustment settings
Optimise In-Game settings
To get the most out of your PuK Thumbstick and Triggers, you should experiment with certain settings available in game. Games differ in the amount of settings and HUD Layout customization available but they usually follow similar naming conventions.
PuK Thumbstick in-game settings:
- Align Virtual Joystick with PuK position - You can do this by either moving your PuK Anchor, or within the HUD/Controls layout of the game.
- Experiment with changing Virtual Joystick behaviour - Look for settings like ‘Dynamic stick mode’, ‘Snap stick mode’ or ‘Left side control’. This is useful if you are experiencing Thumbstick 'Drift'. Sometimes setting your Joystick to 'Fixed' works great, especially if you can increase the 'Deadzone' size too.
- Change your virtual joystick scale - Some games give a better experience when it’s larger but some when it’s smaller. For some games, changing this makes no difference at all.
- Experiement with Joystick ‘Variants’ or ‘Properties’ such as ‘Default’, ‘Classic’ and ‘DPAD’. These will usually offer different rosponse curve profiles for your PuK Thumbstick.
- Experiment with Auto-sprint settings - There is usually a combination of sprint settings in menus and an activation point that you can adjust within the HUD Layout settings which is usually connected to the virtual joystick.
Touch Triggers in-game settings
-
Align your PuK Triggers with your buttons of choice within the HUD Layout, making them a little larger can’t hurt.
- Tune button behaviour within settings - depending on what function you’re mapping to your triggers, this may vary. See our [game guides] for our recommended settings.
* Note. ‘Left side control’ joystick settings with Touch triggers can cause interference. Usually, other joystick settings work better with this combination of PuK products.
Secure your Triggers
If your Triggers aren’t securely attached to your device and move as you press them, this can cause your device display to detect the input as a swipe instead of a press. Fit your triggers as securely as you can.
Clean your display
Normal dirt and grease build up on your display can significantly affect your experience with PuK products. Excess grease can make your PuK feel sluggish and even cause intermittent touch interface issues if the screen is very greasy. Wipe with a microfibre cloth once per session and you'll be fine. Clean with device screen cleaning fluid for even better results.
Check your PuK Hardware
- PuK Thumbstick: If you are experiencing intermittent PuK Thumbstick input and have already tried to resolve by following our suggestions above. There might be something wrong with the PuK Thumbstick. Fortunately we have provided you with a spare stylus. To replace your thumbstick stylus follow this guide: PuK Thumbstick: Stylus Replacement Guide
- PuK Triggers: If you're experiencing constant Trigger failure an important componant of your Triggers might have come loose. Check that your 'conductive pads' are still properly installed. These are the rubber disks that touch your phone display.
Screen Protectors
If you want to use a screen protector, tempered glass screen protectors are usually best for smooth PuK Thumbstick motion however you may experience some touch issues on some devices. Our own testing has shown that touch issues with screen protectors are more common on Apple devices and rare on Android devices.
